Using your 5 senses to descriptively write your story!

Our five senses are so important to our everyday lives but most of the time we take them for granted. We expect they will always work when we need them to.

When we write, we do this aswell. We forget about our characters using their 5 senses to describe a scenario or situation. Sometimes we don’t treat our characters as beings.

They are just characters we made in our minds, right? They aren’t breathing, living beings..¬†

This is our job as writers – To give breath to a character so they can come alive.

Writing a short story or novel is much different than filming a movie or acting out a play. You have to create the visual world inside of the readers mind, without drawing it for them or creating a movie with actors and animations.

You have to build a world for your character to exist in but you need your character to “live” in this world. Describe their world to create a loophole inside of the mind of the reader, pull them out of reality.

Are you using your 5 senses when you’re writing?

Something major with writing your novel that can help set the entire mood of your novel is remembering that your character has 5 senses.

(Unless your character is blind, deaf or cannot smell) but your characters will always be able to use atleast one of these senses.

You can change your wording whether in first person or third person.

Examples:

Instead of not using your senses:

“When I walk into the abyss, it is very dark.”

Use your senses to create a much darker and suspenseful scenario:

“When I enter into the dark abyss, I can smell the horrid odor of burnt flesh. The distant sound of a blood curdling scream causes my stomach to turn.”

Or, In third person:

“Chloe enters the dark abyss, she smells the horrid odor of burnt flesh. The distant sound of a blood curdling scream causes her stomach to turn.”

It tells the reader that your character is entering an abyss that is dark, so you assume she cannot see her surroundings. The smell she is sensing is a warning sign that something awful has happened in the darkness and lastly, the blood curdling scream tells the reader the character is not alone and this is causing her stomach to feel ill.

Something as simple as using your 5 senses can create a world your reader will not want to put down!

Sleepwalker Update!

I am VERY excited to announce that the final edit of “Sleepwalker” is FINISHED!

I am nervous, excited, terrified, ecstatic.. Any emotion you can think of I am feeling it! Creating Sleepwalker has been so different than writing Lucy’s story has been, I know Lucy like the back of my hand and I’ve plotted and planned out every moment of Lucys story. Ashley Niallsons story has thrown me for a loop! I did very little plotting throughout, my original plan was to create a short story – tops of 20,000 words and release it on Halloween just as a horror story but instead I was in the hospital fighting sepsis while I wrote this story, I ran past my deadline and decided her story needed to be explained. I knew I wouldnt be happy with it unless I dug deep into her backstory and took it the full length.

Sleepwalker is now a full length Adult Psychological Thriller novel of 50,000 words!

I will be having one more read through before converting this story into an eBook, I will be releasing the paperback version only 2 weeks later!

Kristyn was the designer I chose to design my cover for “DEVILS DREAM” – I had stared at this cover for almost two months, constantly checking back to see that it was still available. I hadn’t planned to have a face on one of my covers but it was undeniable that this cover was going to give my main character, “Lucy Morningstar” a face!

I got ahold of Kristyn and purchased my cover, within 24 hours she had sent me the cover through my email along with over 4 different advertisements for me to use!

This cover at the time only cost me $70 and looks absolutely beautiful on its Matte finished Paperback!  If it wasn’t for Kristyn’s designs, my character would have never been give a face.

Don’t Sleep! Read this!

Sleepwalker AD Don't Sleep22.jpg

Hey guys!

I have been working on finishing “Sleepwalker” while I am writing “Devils Ascension.” I sit down and start to write one novel but can’t stop thinking of the other, so I have started leaving both tabs open on my writing program. When I hit a road block with one, I switch over to the other!

I did this for months while I was editing “Devils Dream” I was also writing “Devils Mark”

Anyway, I have been working on “Sleepwalker” for well over two months now, it was meant to be a short story or novella, I had originally planned for it to be a short about a girl who moves into a haunted house – well, it has taken on a life of its own and i’m just along for the ride! I was down to only 2 chapters left to write to find that the story called for 9 more chapters!

This ofcourse pushes my release date back but I have to do it and it is making the story so much better! I’m excited to see what people think of Ashley Niallsons story!

So throughout November and December, I will have TONS of updates including cover reveals, downloads, free book promos and how to get a signed copy when both “Sleepwalker” and “Devils Ascension” drops!

“Devils Ascension”

Officially over 27,000 words!

There will be a full cover reveal once I reach my NanoWriMo goal of 50,000 words!

The full cover reveal will take place on my Facebook Author Page

For now, here is a teaser of the front cover of the paperback, “Devils Ascension” .. The fourth novel in the YA Fantasy/Horror series, “The Devils Curse Novels”¬†IMG_20171108_011532_287

Sleepwalker: A Keyhole Novel

Ashley Niallson has had a long 3 years of heartbreak while living in Chicago.. When her Aunt passes away and leaves Ashley the farm house, she is forced to head back home and remember the reason why she left in the first place..

My newest stand alone novel is based on a short story I have written called, “The Keyhole.” I felt like I needed to write more of a story for Ashley Niallson other than this short story so instead of releasing “The Keyhole” I decided to use it to inspire, “The Sleepwalker: A Keyhole Novel”

“Ashley Niallson has had a long 3 years of heartbreak while living in Chicago.. When her Aunt passes away and leaves Ashley the farm house, she is forced to head back home and remember the reason why she left in the first place..”
